Connecting Your "Legacy" Apps to Audiobus 3

Audiobus 3 has significantly enhanced the MIDI routing capabilities, simplifying the interconnection of MIDI applications. However, many music apps have yet to adopt this new system. The Midiflow Adapter effectively bridges compatibility by translating between the traditional Core MIDI framework and the updated Audiobus 3 system. This functionality requires that the apps involved allow for the selection of MIDI ports for input and output or, at a minimum, enable MIDI channel configuration. Merely having an isolated virtual MIDI port in these applications is insufficient.

Setup for Synth Apps (Receivers)

The Midiflow Adapter establishes 10 permanent virtual MIDI output ports, accommodating up to 10 music applications. To configure this setup, launch the Midiflow Adapter and then open your first synthesizer app intended for connection through this adapter. Navigate to its MIDI settings and activate reception on the port designated as "MF Adapter Out 1." It is crucial to disable reception on all other ports. Following this, open Audiobus 3 and place the MF Adapter in a MIDI output slot. In the input slot, add any additional app, such as Midiflow Keyboard. Once you return to the Midiflow Adapter, you can specify which synthesizer app will receive the MIDI data; it should already default to "Out 1," thus making it ready for use.

For subsequent synthetizer applications, repeat these steps while selecting the respective MIDI port such as "MF Adapter Out 2," and continue this process accordingly.

Setup for Sequencer Apps (Senders)

The configuration process mirrors that of receiver apps, with adjustments made to the MIDI output settings instead of the input settings. The Midiflow Adapter provides 10 permanent virtual MIDI input ports identified as "MF Adapter In 1-10" for this specific purpose.

Working with Channels

Certain Core MIDI applications may restrict users from selecting specific input/output ports and only permit configuration by MIDI channel. In such scenarios where triggers function on all ports, assigning a unique channel permits selective activation. Within the Midiflow Adapter, users can designate the respective channel for input/output purposes.

Non-Compatible Apps

If any of your music apps do not support either selecting MIDI ports or defining a MIDI channel, compatibility with Midiflow Adapter is not possible.
